Mendocino Farms

Last Monday, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, David and I were off doing homework in Culver City because we needed a change of scenery. Long story short, we ended up using Yelp to find a restaurant near the Toms store on Abbot Kinney, in Venice. We ended up finding this place called Medocino Farms. Think Chipotle, but cooler, and not burritos but sandwiches.

We walked in and first saw a huge menu, it was pretty easy to use. They had steps:

1. Choose your sandwhich/salad or build your own.

2. Order from the host

3. Try samples at the deli case.

4. Pay at the register.

David ended up ordering a “Spicy Lemongrass Steak Banh Mi” (steak with some stuff in it on a ciabatta panini) and I ordered a “Blue Buffalo, not a Blue Cow” (chicken with buffalo sauce on panini).

We ended up trying all the sides available, my favorite was the mashed potatoes and the healthiest family. Honestly, everything was delicious.

They have beer available, which we thought was funny because they offered the “Eagle Rock Populist IPA” which is were David is from.

They had a really cool soda machine that contains real sugar from sugar cane! It was really nice to know that it did not contain High Fructose Corn Syrup.

They have a really cute kids menu too!

David and I ordered Tea, I got a Passion Fruit Iced Tea and he got the Cranberry Ginger Lemonade. Both were really yummy!

I would really recommend this place. It’s not too far from the beaches, it wasn’t too expensive and, it was a really nice environment.

ipsy vs. birchbox January 2015

Birchbox and Ipsy are makeup subscriptions. They’re each $10 a month. You take a quiz on both sites to see how each service matches you up with their makeup/ skincare brands. Basically each month they send you about 5 different products. I’ve tried Birchbox for 13 months now, at first I was really excited about it, but lately, it’s been kind of disappointing. On the other hand, I’ve tried Ipsy for only 8 months and I’ve loved almost every bag.

This month, for Birchbox, I recieved:

  1. Balance Me – Wonder Eye Cream
  2. Number 4™ Hair Care – Non-Aerosol Hairspray
  3. Harvey Prince – Sincerely Perfume
  4. theBalm – Stainiac – lip and cheek stain
  5. Whish – 3 Whishes Body Butter – Lavendar

Out of the 5 things, all were samples which is fine, but I would like to be able to use a product for more than like a week, you know?

IMG_0556I don’t like the fact that my products come all messed up. Why isn’t birchbox more careful with how they package their products? This is how the tiny bottle of perfume came, in my box like this.  How does that even happen inside two different boxes?!?

1. Balance Me – Wonder Eye Cream

So this cream is supposed to fight wrinkles and aging. The directions say to use a pea size amount on your under eye, which was ridiculously way too much. The cream does not mix very well into my skin. Also, I’m sick of getting anti-aging creams. I’m 23 years old, I don’t understand why they keep sending me this kind of stuff.

2.  Number 4™ Hair Care – Non-Aerosol Hairspray

I think this is the second time they’ve sent me this hairspray. I love Number 4 products and I do like this Hairspray. It’s just the fact that they send me the same thing over and over. It’s such a bummer. Although I do like the little travel sized hairspray, I can take it anywhere.

3. Harvey Prince – Sincerely Perfume

It smells like I walked into a house filled with Indian and Indonesian food. It honestly smells delicious. I don’t know if it’s my thing, especially not for $55 a bottle. I like scents a little more subtle but it was nice to  try, even though you only get about 10 sprays from it.

4. theBalm – Stainiac – lip and cheek stain

I usually try to see how things look on my hand before I put it anywhere else. Also, I have a ton of allergies, so I would rather get an allergic reaction on my hand than somewhere closer to my throat. So I tried this stain out, it was amazing. It took over 5 different times washing my hands in order to get it off, so imagine how long it lasted on my lips. I don’t know if I would use it on my cheeks. It’s a bit much. A bit too red.

5. Whish – 3 Whishes Body Butter – Lavender

I absolutely HATE the chemistry that Whish uses in their products. I don’t like how it feels on my skin. I hate the smell of lavender to top it off. I hate this product.

For Ipsy I got:

  1. Malin+Goetz – Mojito Lip Balm
  2. Hikari Cosmetics Mechanical Eyeliner – Storm
  3. Pacifica Natural Mineral Coconut Eyeshadow – ethereal
  4. Velvet 59 – Velvet Rose Lipgloss
  5. Elizabeth Mott- All Over Shadow Brush

1. Malin+Goetz – Mojito Lip Balm

I love LOVE love this chapstick/ lipgloss thing. It’s glossy like a lipgloss but amazing and soothing like a chapstick. I love the smell of it, the texture. It’s amazing. I’m definitely buying this again.

2. Hikari Cosmetics Mechanical Eyeliner – Storm

I usually do not wear any other eye liner colors other than black, but this grey is amazing. It’s almost dark enough to pass for a black but it’s still subtle enough to be grey. I love the formula, and it definitely does not wear off right away, which I like. I hate reapplying make up. I love putting things on once and be done for the rest of the night.

3. Pacifica Natural Mineral Coconut Eyeshadow – ethereal

So, all five things were full sized products, how awesome is that?!?  I’m really excited about the eyeshadow, it feels amazing! I’m really into a naked look lately. I love the  Urban Decay Naked Palette, so this color was a really nice addition to my usual colors.

4. Velvet 59 – Velvet Rose Lipgloss

I like this lipgloss, it’s pretty much my natural lip color. There’s nothing huge to talk about about this product.

5. Elizabeth Mott- All Over Shadow Brush

I’m obsessed. I love this brush. It feels delicious. Every brush I’ve gotten from ipsy is amazing. I love the bristles on this brush. I love the color. I LOVE PINK! It’s perfect.

Overall, I use the ipsy products a lot more than I use the Birchbox products. I love my Ipsy bag, rating 9/10. My Birchbox was okay, rating 6/10.  Sadly enough, my favorite thing about birchbox was the actual box it came in this time around!

Sometimes I Jump To Conclusions

This weekend I learned so many things. If you read my previous post, you know that I had a little bit of a rage post thing going on.

Sometimes, I’m too quick to judge people. Sometimes, I don’t remember to get the full story. I’ve decided to come up with a way of not going crazy. In the moment I will count backwards from 20, because 10 isn’t enough. I will also “sleep on it” if I feel really upset about something, before doing anything about a situation.

Blogging is now becoming a way of letting out my feelings. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.

The reason I’m writing this post is because I felt like Saturday, I jumped to conclusions. Sometimes you have to remember that people keep things quiet because they are ashamed of themselves. They’re ashamed of decisions they’ve made, or decisions they are on the ledge about making.

Anyway, my point is: I’ll wait and see when people need me. I’ll be there when you do, but I will not let you hurt me.

Sometimes people say things to me and they stick. Most of the time I just shrug things off. I don’t care what you have to say about a certain person or about thing. I usually make up my mind about something or someone and until I’m proven wrong I stick with that idea.

That is, until someone told me from an observation they have that the certain person isn’t “building you up and making  you a better person rather than that person is showing you what not to do and who not to be.” But honestly, this can be about anyone. If you think about it, everyone makes mistakes. Everyone does stupid things. But it’s true, when the person only causes you headaches [daily] maybe it’s time to let go.

It’s funny. I’m an open book. I have no problem talking about myself and my friends and my problems to anyone, to a certain extent. I tell my “best friends” everything, and in turn, they tell me nothing. Actually, ironically enough, the one person I would expect to not tell me things because they’re so closed in general, is the one who opens up to me the most.

I look at other best friends and can’t help realize that my life looks more like Blair and Serena from Gossip Girl than Rory and Lane from Gilmore Girls. I know all friendships are different, but maybe I expect too much? Maybe I picked the two girls in this world that are so closed up that they would rather keep it all in than let it out and speak to me and open up.

Honestly, if I ask someone to text me when they’re home or when they get to their destination, its because I care. It’s not because I’m trying to be nosey. If I didn’t care then, if you ended up getting into a car accident or something, I wouldn’t know, and I really wouldn’t care.

I’m done caring. I am going back to the mean person I was. I’m done trying to cater to you and your feelings. I’m done trying to text you and see how you are just so you can get annoyed with me and my “attitude.” I’m done trying to figure out exactly what to do or say so you won’t feel attacked or hurt.  [No worries school friends, I’ll still be me at school, this is for those who I hang out with outside of school]

I’m sorry you feel the need to lie and hide and cheat. I’m sorry you can’t trust me enough to know that I would never get mad if you do something stupid. Or whatever.

Whenever you feel like needing a friend I’ll be here because I love you. But I’m done making an effort.

School Friends

Today I realized why I love going to school so much.

It’s been a tough week with going back to school and work, getting back into the flow of life, among other things. I realized that my first week of school was amazing. It feel really great to go to class and the first thing you see are people smiling at you and saying hi. People who you haven’t known for too long but you want to see where it will go.

For a long time, I tried not letting new people into my life. I tried not hanging out with new people but this week I realized that I love my school friends. I love seeing them everyday. It’s so nice for someone to come up to you and say “hey Elia, I missed you, how was your break? Let’s hangout outside of school, soon?” Or just in general ask how your day has been, follow up on that certain thing we were talking about before. I love that my school friends don’t know details about what I’m talking about but are still supportive. I love that they don’t pry but are attentive.  I love being at school. It’s a really great feeling being able to run around from place to place, from work to class, from meeting to the gym. I love the hustle and bustle of everything surrounding school. Yes, it’s exhausting, but mostly, it’s exhilarating!

Honestly, I hate being home. Why? Because it’s so plain. I love running around from place to place all the time. I love being surrounded by people. I hate being alone. It’s time to make these friends into lifelong friends. I know graduation is coming up soon, and I have to figure out something to do during my year in between my BA and my masters, but I will. So I don’t go crazy.

2015 New Year’s Resolutions

So, last year ended roughly; thankfully it’s a new year!!! (:

I started the year incredibly sick, apparently I have a “chronic allergy to the environment,” thanks Los Angeles!!! I was feverish, I had a sore throat, stuffy nose and even got a cold sore. It was horrible!!!

Anywho, I started my second to last quarter at Cal State LA, and I’m super duper excited! 156 days until GRADUATION! So, it’s time to get my New Year’s Resolutions down on paper, errr, in writing.

First, I’m committed to getting in shape and losing weight. No, it’s not because I think I’m fat or whatever, but because I want to feel good about myself. I want to look back at my graduation and feel proud of how I look. I want to be healthy and live a really long life. Getting in shape is important to me, because one can never really be too careful. With illnesses popping up everywhere, you have to make sure that you are doing your best to stay out of trouble, and that’s what I want to do.

Getting in shape!

Getting in shape!

Second, I want to get good grades. Though, the classes I’m currently taking are a little hard [thanks senior year], I want to be super successful. I want to be proud of myself and I want to surpass my current grades. I know a grade isn’t really a good measurement for knowledge, but I want to be able to continue onto Graduate school and the only way I will be able to is by having really amazing grades.

Second to Last Quarter

Second to Last Quarter

Third, I want to write a blog post at least once a week, probably on Fridays. I’ve had my blog since the beginning of the summer [2014] and haven’t started getting into a consistent writing cycle. I want to change that. I still want to figure out what kind of blog I want this to be, so soon we shall see!

First blog photo!

Fourth, I want to plan a couple of trips for this upcoming year. A lot of things are happening this year which means there will be a lot of celebrating all over the world! In chronological order: for MLK weekend, I want to get together with my friends and relax at my favorite place in SoCal: Balboa Island. A weekend-get-away would be the perfect way to start the quarter, since I was not able to do so during the Holiday break. Next, my birthday and my father’s birthday fall the week before my Spring Break, he’s finally turning the big 5-0, so I want to do something special. We shall see… I’ll keep you posted. Then, my middle [little] sis turns 21, so we will be celebrating it in Las Vegas, with Miss Britney Spears! Maybe another weekend-get-away for Memorial Day to follow, for S‘s birthday. Then, Graduation! I want to go to Europe with my best friend, but that’s still tentative; maybe a beach trip with the fam? And for this upcoming summer, I want to visit my lovely friend Anna in Chi-town, and get crazy! Last but not least, as far as my future-seeing eye can see, one of my oldest and dearest friends Lucia is getting married in August in Pittsburgh, so it looks like I’ll be spending time again in Steel City!!! I’m really excited!!! IMG_0379

Fifth, I want to become a morning person. So far, the first week of school has forced me to be awake early, though I’ve woken up early enough to make it through my morning routine with out rushing. I call that a win! I want to become a morning person, because, it seems like people get so much done during the time I’m sleeping in, so I decided to give it a try! I wish I had time to take a nap though! sigh.

Sixth, become even more involved in my Honor Society, Lambda Pi Eta. Last quarter I joined LPE and was able to join the brand new Marketing committee!!! Our committee is doing such a great job and everything we do. We market [obviously], and get people involved. Personally, this resolution seems to be coming true already, because I was just asked to take charge of LPE’s blog!!! I’m really excited for the challenge.

Hopefully, since this is all in writing, I will be able to keep up and keep my promises to myself. Wish me luck!!! Here’s to a new year, and an improved me!
